Mossel Bay - moving up the Garden Route

For the first week of the trip, we had been on the move nearly every hour of every day. In good spirits but physically and emotionally tired, we both needed a bit of a breather. Mossel Bay provides that for us. We didn’t do see much there, but there didn’t appear as if there was tons to do anyway. Like every town in SA, there are dozens of excursions to sign up for, but the costs range from $50-150 a person, depending on the activity. Most of them are the same in every place, and we’ve spent quite a bit so far in Cape Town and having already dropped a few thousand for the safari in two weeks. Currently we are content cutting costs and exploring without opening our wallets.

We did, however, enjoy a wonderful meal at a beachside restaurant

The highlight of our time in Mossel Bay was probably our visit to the hospital. We had been putting off the issue of Ben’s ankle for too long and needed to get it looked at. The hospital recommended to us was too busy, so they sent us to a private doctor across the street. Apparently this place also had too many patients, so we were sent again down the stress to another private doctor. Ironically his name was Dr. Kaiser! Actually the spelling was Dr. Uys Keyser, pronounced like Ace Kaiser. He said “it’s like the ace of cards or Ace Ventura.” Everything about this scenario was simply perfect. Dr. Keyser sent us back to the hospital’s radiology department with orders for x-rays and medicine, which were taken by the kind African nurses within the hour. Back to Keyser’s office, who finally delivered the news we had been hoping to hear: No Break. Well thank the good Lord!!

“Take some medicine, keep moving and exercising, you’ll be good in a few weeks.”

All in all, Mossel Bay seemed like a nice town, but we didn’t have it in us to explore it. Tomorrow we are off to either Knysna or Plettenberg Bay.
